Hard Drive Failure is Imminent

This proved to be a wholly truthful prediction from my computer.

Obituary: Toshiba Hard Drive MK4025GAS
Toshie, as he was affectionately known to his loved ones, passed away last night, April 27th, 2005 at 23:48 EST. He died at a young age, entering his current job mere months ago in the Fall of 2004. Toshie replaced his older brother at the latter's expiraton, however, he was not able to live up to the high expectations set forth by his older sibling. His lifelong companion, a Sony VAIO GRX-550, lead the eulogy, poignantly recounting the happy days they shared, such as the installation of Windows XP Home Edition and Toshie's favorite program, Winamp 5. Toshie's legal Guardian, Anders, plans to dispose of the remains in the garbage after pounding the lifeless steel body of Toshie with a hammer and lighting it on fire.

Please forgo sending any flower arragements and instead please donate to the Toshie Replacement Charity Fund.

The Wait Continues...

I should have an answer from CEIBS by Friday. The wait is killing me. One simple email will direct my life for the next 2 years.

Also. Windows just told me that "Hard drive failure is imminent." GREAT!

F1 Thrills... and Montreal Bound

Despite the premature retirement of Kimi Raikkonnen (and not even to engine failure!) from P1 after mere laps, yesterday’s CBS broadcast of F1 was one of the most exciting races of the past two seasons, if not more.

Off to lovely Montreal in 30 minutes to do a due diligence on a client, will perhaps drop in my brother as well. Yay poutine!

It baffles me completely

That the current state of the windows operating system and its vast shortcomings is the product of one of the most successful and profitably companies in the world. This anger stems from my impending deletion and reinstallation of windows. This should only be a day long process for something that occurred as recently as fall 2004.

On a lighter note, I have F1 qualifying and the following race to occupy me in the interim.

OK, this is just totally ridiculous.

Paul Allen's (of Microsoft fame) 414 foot, US$200 million, holds 7 more boats, one submarine, and has two helicopter landing pads. This is literally a personal cruise ship. And I want one. Oh, and it requires a 60 person crew.

Sorry, no interior pictures.

Strange Feelings Abound

I haven’t been this worried/anxious/stressed in a long time. Argh, can’t get this financing problem out of my mind. I should at least wait to see if I even get in.

”Fromage!

How to find $35,000.

Anxiety is my current state of emotions.

Issue #1: I had my CEIBS interview last night during which I learned that, for international students, school essentially starts Monday July 25th. That is approximately 3-4 weeks earlier than I had anticipated leaving. This is for an intense 4-week “orientation” including language, cultural, and history studies. It’s not mandatory, technically, but I’d definitely arrive several steps behind if I chose to skip it. Since this is where I want to go, I’ve been assuming that this is my new timetable. That means that in order to see all my friends/family I only have a month or so to do so (I will still be working so that leaves only the weekends, four to be exact, that I am not already occupied). Not the leisurely paced summer visitation schedules I had been mentally planning.

Issue #2: Given my constrained timetable and that fact that I may not return to the US for up to two years, I’m seriously reconsidering my CFA exam studying commitment. I’ve already paid for the damn thing and bought the books and software and all that, so I’m definitely TAKING the exam. The question is, how much heart and soul I want to put into it. More like a study when I can, hope to pass situation rather than a study super hard and expect to pass situation. A more leisurely commitment would lead to an infinitely more enjoyable last couple of months on this continent & hemisphere.

Issue #3: I have to figure out how to pay for this damn education. All the US student loan providers only consider applicants for loans that are going to schools on their “eligible” list. Of course CEIBS is not on that list. The first question they all ask on their websites is “What state is the school located?” As you can pretty guess, China is not in that list. So I have to fund a $25,000 tuition bill plus pay for living & other educational expenses and that brings the estimated total to something like $35,000.

Seems like my options are to go for a personal loan and beg the bank to restructure it as a student loan without any of the requirements. Meaning, there are no payments to be made until 3-6 months after graduation. Obviously, making student loan payments while I’m still in school is not an attractive solution. And if I can’t find this money, then all my aspirations for the past year or two are flushed down the toilet. I’m even trying to figure out who I know that is rich and would lend me money. But that would be extremely last resort.

My non-loan funding options are personal savings and 401k/IRA education loan. Personal savings I will need DURING school and borrowing from my

Issue #4: I still haven’t heard back from Columbia or NYU and I fully expect one of those schools to throw a monkey wrench/life line (depending on your perspective) in my plans.

Fear me...

and my l33t html skills. Picture works now. And pictures are an important part of my blog because no one actually wants to read, just look at pretty pictures.

Its beautiful in NY today, but unfortunately, I am stuck inside my office studying. Or trying to at least.

Still haven't figured out how my profile/sidebar moved to the bottom, though.

It appears...

…that my attempt at using HTML to link to an image below failed miserably. I’m baffled at my ineptitude at the simplest computer task, especially since I followed a tutorial word for word. In addition, my Profile/Links/Archive section has mysteriously changed its real estate location to the bottom of the page and in the wrong column. Lonely, I guess. Or perhaps foreclosure on digital space? I tried changing the template a couple of times to see if it would fix itself. However, I only managed to lose all my links. So goes the endless battle with computers.

HKUST interview: Went very well, my fear of not being able to understand him due to a long distance and potential accent were unfounded. It went swimmingly, I think. The interviews so far have been relatively easy, due to the fact that I know exactly why MBA, why now, and why here. If there is one subject that will get me talking, it’s business, Asia, and myself. Next up is CEIBS on Wednesday night @ 9:30pm. So far no case study in any interview, which is a good thing, I guess, although I’m still curious to the logistics of that type of interview. Perhaps I’ll regret saying that.

NYU sent me an email saying my application is incomplete but the recommendation from my co-worker has definitely been competed and submitted! WTF? That could explain why I have not heard from them. Will have to send an email their way.

And I missed South Park last night. And I need to post car show photos. Also, I have a video of the last two laps of the MotoGP opener. Simply amazing battle between Rossi and Gibernaeu, although that “racing incident” was very borderline.

And F1 continues its “spring break.” Next week, Imola!

HKUST Campus (Total of 8,500 students)

I hope that worked.

I also realize how exceedingly boring this mass of writing is. But give me 2 months, honest. Stupid cfa exams!

Interview Updates - Via Email

RSM interview went very well last night, took about 45 minutes and aside from one brain fart, the guy said I had clear vision of my future and would be a good fit for RSM and that he would recommend me. So, apparently, its not standard procedure to tell the interviewee your final decision so I’ll take that as a good sign. Acceptance is by no measure guaranteed but a good interview helps immensely. Tonight @ 9PM is HKUST. I’m expecting a tougher interview as well as a case study (not quite sure what that entails or how it is structured) since this is with an admissions officer rather than an alumni (alumni are known for also selling the school and not having as in depth knowledge of the applicant as an admissions officer would).

CEIBS: Apparently there have been email problems at the school. I have to send them an email from every email account I have tonight. Either way, though, I have a time slot for Wednesday night (Thursday morning Beijing Time). I just have to make sure that my emails have been getting through.

On a side note, RSM and HKUST have closed the gap with CEIBS. I’ve definitely taken them more seriously lately. My reservation regarding RSM is that I’m not sure what my chances are of staying in Europe afterwards. And my reservation regarding HKUST is that the class size is only 60 people. I’d like a little larger class, probably at least 100, in order to really diversify the people and whatnot. But HKUST has a beautiful campus, and I’m not one to be normally persuaded by that kind of stuff. HKUST also is an engineering school, which would be a perfect place to look for people with innovative technology who need a business partner. That is something that CEIBS and RSM don’t have. This is especially significant given my entrepreneurship goal.

When Did the Blind Get a Tax Break? - World War II, of course. By Daniel Engber

When Did the Blind Get a Tax Break? - World War II, of course. By Daniel Engber

Damn you, blind people!

Posting this now using the BlogThis feature. Lets me post right from a page I want to link to in the blog. So far, I think i've used all the easy Blogger features now (Post via email, post picture via Picassa2/Hello, edited my template and links). I guess the rest is the hard part, writing and ^%*(#) html.

Posting via Email...

So, T-minus 4 hours to interview #1.  Read up on the school, the interview section of “How to Get Into the Top MBA Programs,” a little online searching as well.  In a way, I’m more worried about the little stuff than the big stuff since I like to think I have my goals/ambitions/ideas pretty well set.  Tomorrow, HKUST.  And strangely, not answer from CEIBS.  I’m beginning to think that Gmail has screwed something up.  The first time I sent a response to the interview invite, it ended up in my mailbox at work.  Luckily I came in on a Saturday and saw it there.  Resent it on Saturday expecting them to send the schedule out Monday Beijing time, but still nothing yet.  I end sent an email asking them to confirm that they received what I sent.  And again, nothing.  Unfortunately, stupid me used the same method, so if they didn’t get my first email, they wouldn’t have gotten my second.  I hope I didn’t get that invite by mistake and they’re devising some way to politely let me know.

Otherwise, looks like my sister is going to be attending Boston University this fall.  I haven’t been told officially, but that seems to be the word on the street.  I think she’s a little afraid she won’t like it, but I’m sure she’ll settle in fine immediately.  Just as long as she doesn’t entrench herself like my brother.

CEIBS Interview

In one of the previous posts, I mentioned an email I sent to CEIBS essentially begging for an interview/acceptance, although I hope I used a more eloquent manner. Anyway, low and behold, mere hours later I got an email from "MBA Admissions Office" inviting myself, along with 14 other candidates, for phone interviews! Either my timing was overeager by a few hours, or they liked what they read.

Anyway, so the interview status is as follows:
Rotterdam - Tuesday April 12, 6PM @ an alumni working at Goldman Sachs. I've heard horror stories about the rigorous nature of GS interviews (putting it lightly even, I believe). Hopefully, he doesn't have me solving brain teasers or espousing theories on the credit derivatives spread on AT&T.
HKUST - Scheduled for April 13th at 9PM. My biggest fear here is that due to the long distance phone quality and potential interviewer accent I won't be able to understand what the person is saying. Although, I think most MBA interviews follow the same guideliens (why mba, why here, etc.)
CEIBS - Will hopefully have an email waiting for me with a scheduled time.
NYU/C0lumbia - No responses yet. Columbia is getting late, the long it goes without me hearing the lesser my chance of getting in, which is already slim to begin with. NYU, well, I should be getting one soon. The difference is, I think I actually have a chance at NYU.

Regardless, back to "Income Tax Effects of Business Combinations"

IAS 22

So I just read the Financial Statement Analysis textbook section on the effect of accounting method for business combinations. The shit can be incredibly complicated. And at the end of the chapter they say "both scenarios are very simplistic" ahahahhaha!!1

I'm going to cry.

Business School

To the point of this blog, or at least the temporary search, my quest for business school education. The whole application process is done (still waiting on one recommender) and waiting for requests to interview. Of which, I've gotten two, one from RSM Erasmus University (formerly Rotterdam School of Management) and the other from Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. In a way, my number #4 and #5, if you listen to FT.com's global ranking system. Which goes something like this:
  • 1 - Columbia Business School, NYC
  • 2 - NYU - Stern, NYC
  • 3 - China Europe International Business School, Shanghai China
  • 4 - RSM, Rotterdam, The Netherlands
  • 5 - HKUST, Hong Kong, SAR, China

Personally, CEIBS is my #1 by far. Really want to go to China. All the books I've read over the past year or two pretty much relate to China in some way, with a couple of exceptions (House of Leaves being one).

I'm about to send an email to CEIBS essentially reiterating my interest and saying that if I get in, I'll definitely go. Hopefully, that makes me more attractive. In the meantime, I must get ready for my interviews. HKUST is this week, I think, and RSM I'm still trying to get in touch with the guy. Mr. Walton, why will you not respond to my emails???

Well...

NYC Auto Show last weekend (March 28 or something) with my sister then easter dinner at Dad's.
Sunday easter dinner at mom's.
Consequently, lamb sandwiches for the past week at dinner.
This past weekend amounted to studying.
If you have a PS2 God of War is highly recommended.
